Being Asleep
The Message
(Good News)
Most people are asleep. They are born into a dream and never get the chance to find out that there was an alternative, especially to suffering. Being asleep isn't bad or good, it is a very normal, temporary state, like being young. Eventually it is guaranteed to change, at the latest,.. when you physically die. But knowing about the possibility of waking up makes all the difference. You see, if you are asleep, it doesn't matter what you think because you don't know any better. However if you taste even once the freedom from your mind and suffering, you will no longer be able to resist... being drawn toward more consciousness and understanding. This initial realization cannot be artificially produced or given to anyone. If you are here already, it might mean that you have what it takes already... to Take Refuge in the Buddha.
Watch this next scene (about 5 min). It will show how Jake (and so can you) realizes that he isn't the "voice inside". In fact his Ego is a separate entity that can be looked at and even be dismissed in the middle of life and death.
If you have made this self discovery (that your Ego isn't entirely you), than you have much better chances Taking Refuge in the Buddha. You have recognized the significance of Buddha's core message. This First Jewel is about establishing Form, rituals, practices, and anchor your seeking into time and lineage in form of a teacher or teachings. A recognizable and preferable way of conveying the teachings that resonate with you. Taking Refuge in the Buddha is only one way of recognizing that there is more to life than birth - living - death of the body and mind and the possibility that one day the re-birth cycle is concluded. One needs no more attachments and rooting in Form to experience the ultimate state of existence.
Taking Refuge in the Buddha
Taking Refuge in the Dharma
Takig Refuge in the Buddha can only take you so far as you keep finding help and external crutches. Teachers, their teachings, methods, practices and other formalities only help you to establish that eventually you have to do on your own, without any external help, authority or oversight. Taking Refuge in the Dharma is about crossing that treshold of continuing one's own path, having accumulated enough wisdom and practice to be able to sustain one's own internal fire and perhaps sharing it with others.
The 3rd jewel is taking refuge in the Sangha, the community of those who walk the path of awakening and have come before you. It represents a collective support system, where the presence of like-minded practitioners nurtures one's spiritual growth. In this stage, personal insights deepen through shared experiences, while the wisdom of the group enriches individual understanding. The Sangha fosters connection, humility, and compassion, as each member serves both as a guide and a fellow seeker. It is within this sacred fellowship that the transformative power of community unfolds, making the spiritual journey a shared endeavor.
Taking Refuge in the Sangha
As you can see, this "Dharma Calibration" was not meant to give you a numeric score, where you are on the Dharma Scale, as that would be impossible and therefore meaningless. Rather, we've drawn up clearly distinguishable states on the seeking path: Asleep, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha where anyone can easily dive into any of these Pools and find much support, structure and peace of mind/soul in a comprehensive and working path to ultimate individual and collective liberation from the Self, Ego, Suffering.
